Liquid nitrogen ice cream?
Now, I don’t usually post about ice cream, but this is definitley an interesting take on an old classic.   Chin chin labs in the U.K. makes ice cream using liquid nitrogen!  And, who knows? Maybe someone will bring the concept to the U.S. and offer vegan variations… http://gourmettraveller.wordpress.com/2010/07/12/chin-chin-labs-liquid-nitrogen-ice-cream-parlour/

Pineapple Tomatoes, oh my!
My friend has pineapple tomatoes growing in her yard, and they have become my favorite heirloom tomato! Next summer I am going to plant them.  Since I don’t have a garden I’m going to use a large pot.  You can grow them from seed if you can’t find them at the nursery.  Either way, start looking early or you’ll miss out. Pineapple tomatoes have a red and yellow peel and...

1,760 calorie slice of cheesecake, anyone?
Ugh, how do they manage the amazing feat of cramming that many calories into a slice of cheesecake?  Not that cheesecake is “slimming”, but come on! This link lists 10 of the worst and best foods for you. Under best foods, check out #6, Wasa Crispbread.  This has become one of my pantry staples!  If I’m going to be out during lunchtime and want to pack something that...

Split Pea Soup with Canadian Bacon
I like a smoky split pea soup, but don’t always (meaning almost never) have a ham hock around.  Plus a ham hock tends to be fatty, so I prefer to use lean Canadian bacon for that smoky taste.   This soup is filling so I usually serve it with a nice, light green salad.  Just add some crusty bread on the side for hearty eaters! For any vegans/vegetarians out there, you can sub the bacon with...

The hidden risks of going gluten-free...
Of course it’s not risky to go gluten free, but it is risky to assume that because a product is gluten free that you don’t have to limit your servings. Gluten free cookies, bagels, bread, cakes are chock full of CARBS!  Not healthy to overdo. Just like the no-fat craze years back (which some though of as a free pass to consume massive amounts of fat-free cookies) over indulging in...

Vegan Mocha Pudding Parfait
OK, so I love a parfait.  Enough to have parfait glasses.  But you can make this recipe using small bowls, although you will miss the chance to see the pretty layers.  But I digress! An easy, fairly low sugar, no cook, vegan pudding.  What can be better for a light summer dessert? Vegan Mocha Pudding Parfait 1 1/2 graham crackers 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1 block firm tofu  1 shot of espresso,...

Roasted Farmer's Market Veggies
I had two new friends over for dinner last night and they warned me that they were “meat and potato” people, not veggie lovers.   So I grilled a couple of steaks (a real splurge if you buy organic meat), threw a pan of quartered, small yukon gold potatoes in the oven with a dash of olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper, and, since the oven was on, put this recipe in the oven to...

Dark chocolate, healthy and delicious...
but, of course, you can only indulge in a little every day since it’s still calorically dense.  So when I eat chocolate I want it to be worth the calories! Check out this taste test of 20 brands so you can choose the one that’s best for you: http://www.kitchendaily.com/2011/08/15/the-best-dark-chocolate-our-taste-test-results/?ncid=webmail6#photo-1

Dirty Chai? A slideshow of Starbucks Secret Menu.
From The Daily Meal, a slideshow of some off the menu (and some off the wall) items from Starbucks. Basically off the menu items you can order.  I like to stick to my unsweetened iced teas or iced americanos with soy, but to each their own!!! http://www.thedailymeal.com/ultimate-guide-starbucks-secret-menu-slideshow-1

Yonanas frozen dessert maker...
I used to do this with a champion juicer.  But the machine weighed 10 pounds and you had to risk slicing your fingers off in order to clean it (after every using with crisco), so alas we had to give it up.  Maybe they have improved them…but I digress! This handy device makes banana frozen dessert.  Sounds yummy, but I might try this with a blender and see if it works! AUGUST 8, 2011Another...

From tastingtable.com-new gluten free flour!
Mon. 08 Aug ‘11Cooking | NATIONAL Powder Room A line of alternative flours lifts our baking ennui  Whole wheat is only the beginning. There is an untapped world of grains and seeds for grinding, and, thanks to the Peruvian company Zocalo, we’ve gained a few new ways to enhance our baked goods. Of the handful of alternative flours available, perhaps the most interesting is the mesquite....
